Walk, Learn, Experience: Deep Time Walk – the New Story in motion

The 4.6km Deep Time Walk combines science with humanities to give an augmented audio experience of walking across the geological timeline of Earth from 4.6bn years ago to the present day. The interactive audiobook, available for iOS and Android, enables walkers to join the characters of a scientist and fool as they journey across a history of the living Earth. With a dramatised script written by Dr. Stephan Harding and Peter Oswald (recorded with professional actors by a team that work for the BBC) users are able to listen to different aspects of earth history as they walk through time, experiencing humanity’s deep ancestral heritage with all life.

This session will give a case study of the history of the Deep Time Walk at Schumacher College, why the app was developed and some of the challenges with regards to creating an experience that bridges the science/spirituality divide. Several audio samples from the walking experience will be given, demonstrating how the app encourages a new audience to connect with the New Story via appropriate technology, inspiring reverence and awe for the living Earth. The session will also outline how the app is used with groups as well as give an outline of future plans including the development of new editions of the app for different demographics and how the project encourages local action and community engagement.

The Deep Time Walk App

Deep Time Walk is a 4.6km walking audio book for smartphones telling a history of the living Earth. This unfolding takes you from 4,600,000,000 years ago (4,600 Million Years Ago) to the present day, with each metre walked representing 1 million years. During the dramatised walk between a fool and a scientist you learn from the latest scientific evidence about how our planet evolved over this vast stretch of geological time, including the accretion of the Earth from a disc of rocky debris, the formation of the oceans and atmosphere, the appearance of first life – bacteria, then the first nucleated cells and multicellular organisms.
